Modelling the Stratigraphy, Geoarchaeology, and Aggregate Resources of English Valley Systems: Application of a Process-Based Landscape Evolution Model
نویسنده
چکیده
This proposal sets out the justification, scope and terms of reference for conducting a 16-month pilot study of (1) the dynamics of geomorphic change in English lowland alluvial systems, focusing on the Upper Thames Valley, and (2) the implication of such change for paleoenvironmental reconstruction, preservation and visibility of the archaeological record, and for aggregates exploration. The project will involve using a process-based model of landscape evolution to develop and visualize a set of alternative scenarios for the Holocene evolution of the Upper Thames Valley. The project will have three linked components: a scientific component, an outreach component, and an applied component. The primary objectives of the scientific component are (a) to explain the origins of observed geomorphic change (e.g., episodic alluviation in valley systems) and in particular explore potential impacts of hillslope land-clearance on alluviation and flood frequency in valleys, and (b) to examine the implications of such change for erosion, burial, and visibility of archaeological remains. The outreach component is designed to take advantage of the modeling technology to communicate the dynamics of alluvial geomorphology by producing an animated sequence showing erosion, alluviation, and river channel change over time. The applied component will consist of a model-based analysis of controls on burial depth of aggregates. In this proposal, we also outline potential follow-on activities that could be incorporated into a Project Phase 2 beginning in April, 2004. These include application of the model to other valley systems, enhanced outreach and communication, and an extension of the applied component.

Land use change is certainly the most important factor that affects the conservation of natural ecosystems, resulting the conversion of natural lands such as forests and pastures into agricultural, industrial and urban areas. Despite numerous studies investigating landscape patterns due to land use change, the driving forces of landscape change has been less studied in Iran. In this study, Arti...

متن کاملAlluvial Stratigraphy and Geoarchaeology in the Big Fork River Valley, Minnesota: Human Response to Late Holocene Environmental Change
The Late Quaternary geomorphology and stratigraphy of the Big Fork River valley, within the Rainy River basin of northern Minnesota, reveals evidence of prehistoric human interaction with late Holocene riverine environments. By 11000 14 C B.P., deglaciation made the region inhabitable by human groups using Clovis artifacts. Human habitation would also have been possible during the Moorhead low ...
